Chapter 29

After the meeting, Jake walked to the parking lot with Cody by his side, and saw Terrell and Roxanne climbing into the police surveillance van. Terrell motioned for Jake to join them for a moment.

In the van, Roxanne and Terrell sat in the front seats, and Terrell, as usual, spoke as if he was in charge. “Jukebox, you watch your six. That’s twice now assassins have made an attempt on you. They’ll try again. Mark my words.”

“Roger that, Lieutenant Grinds,” Jake reached out between the front seats and pointed at Roxanne’s to-go coffee cup. “Do I smell chocolate and vanilla flavorings?” The two of them traded a lot of humorous put downs but held each other in high esteem from the times they’d worked together.

Roxanne lightly slapped his hand. “You wouldn’t like it. Caffè latte with two pumps of mocha, one pump of vanilla, topped with whipped cream, a chocolate drizzle and sprinkles of cocoa.” She picked up her cup and set it in a dashboard cupholder out of his reach, then turned and gazed at him. “Grinds?”

Jake nodded. “Radio call sign from combat. Speaking of which, when you contact me, be sure to use your new black phone, not your regular phone.”

“I already know that, Jake.” She added a few curse words for emphasis.

He smiled. “That’s pretty good, but you’ll never out cuss a Marine, so don’t quit your day job.”

“Did you have anything useful to say?” she asked with a jaded smile.

“Yes, it would be quite useful if you’d wear a T-shirt that says: I Have Issues.”

“I’ll wear one if you do,” she snapped.

“Fair enough. And we can find one to fit Cody, too.” He patted his dog on the back.

Cody woofed at them.

Roxanne smiled fondly at Cody. “Sometimes I’d swear he knows what we’re saying.”

“Sometimes he does,” Jake said. “And other times he simply understands the feeling behind the words, tone of voice, body language and the scent of body chemistry.”

“So, you’re not planning to have Cody wear the microchipped dog tag on your trip to Hawaii?” Roxanne deadpanned.

Jake let out a loud breath. “As part of your investigation into the Animal Control computer system, maybe you can check out an employee named Ike Bindan.”

“Do you think he’s involved with The Society?” Terrell asked.

“No, but he seemed to hate Cody enough that he might share his computer password with someone who offered him a fat bribe,” Jake said.

“While Rox follows the data trails, I’ll run a full background check on Bindan,” Terrell said.

Jake opened a back passenger door and stepped outside, Cody following. “Thank you both for your help. It means a lot to me.”

Terrell nodded at him. “Semper Fi.”

Roxanne stared at Jake thoughtfully for a moment, as if not sure what to say. Then she went with, “Keep your hands off of my coffee.”

Jake almost said, the lady doth protest too much, but he didn’t want to sound as if he were flirting. Then he thought of joking that he wouldn’t touch her milky caffè latte with a ten-foot pole.
